The 1940 photograph shows the US Army transport Republic at a New York pier just prior to sailing. The 17,910-gross-ton ship debuted in 1924 as the Hamburg-American liner President Grant, operating in the company’s transatlantic service. The ship served in both World War I and II. In 1946, she was laid up, and she was scrapped in 1952.

In 1930, the Grace Line’s Santa Clara entered service between New York and Chile. She was a liner of 8,060 gross tons, 486 feet in length, and could carry 157 passengers. As with other American passenger liners, she was drafted for troopship service in World War II and renamed Susan B. Anthony. On June 7, 1944, she struck a sea mine off the Normandy coast and sank.
